Lower School

About the Lower School

Our curriculum for Pre-K through 6th grade is varied in its influences. We offer classical memory work for those who want to use it. Our Science and History classes are Montessori-inspired and rely on interactive and hands-on experiences. Music class includes reading music and appreciation. Students are broken up into three age groups to rotate through the three classes with a break for oral presentations and snacks.

Lower School morning classes: Memory Work and Scholeio, follow a 24 week schedule. Afternoon classes run the full 30 weeks of our school year.

Parents of Lower School Students are required to remain on campus and to help in the classrooms.

Classes Offered

Memory Work

Our classical families use Claritas Publishing’s memory work as a backbone. Claritas is a classical curriculum with a four-year cycle of subjects and information. We offer a separate memory work section first thing in the morning before the Scholeio program begins.

Music instruction includes appreciation, instrumental, and vocal instruction. Students will need to purchase the required level from God Made Music by PraiseHymn for their class.

Oral Presentations are given on a rotation by each student during snack time. The topic of these presentations is up to the student and family. Oral presentations give students a chance to build confidence speaking in front of others. Many students use this as a show-and-tell time. It is a casual and supportive environment for students to begin to grow their public speaking skills.

Extra time is allotted for class transition time, bathroom breaks, and snack time between classes.

Pre-Humanities: This introductory humanities class is for 6th and 7th graders and meets from 11 am-12 pm on Mondays. This class introduces students to Socratic dialogue, reading for deeper meaning, and writing weekly reflections. It is a literature-only class, which will read diverse, age-appropriate novels. It is not specific to any particular historical period or world region. 6th graders who choose to take this class will take it in place of the Scholeio music class.

Fine Art

Visual Arts (Grades 2-6th)

Our wonderful art teacher works with the students through many lovely, hands-on art projects over the course of the year. Some projects are simply for fun and some are mini-studies on a particular artist, piece of art, or specific style or medium. Due to the wide range of abilities of our Lower School Students, this class is designed for ages 8+.

Vocal Performance (returning 2026-27) The Schola Cantorum is a musical ensemble to introduce children ages 8-12 to the historic music of the Catholic Church. Participants will learn the rudiments of singing Gregorian chant focusing on vocal technique, Latin pronunciation, and music reading.

Storytime Theatre (Grades K- 3rd)

Come experience the fun and fantasy of acting while reading through favorite stories and tales. Silliness is encouraged as is voluntary dress-up and use of props!

Illuminate (Grammar & Writing for 4th-6th grade)

Illuminate is an English language program featuring in-depth English grammar and writing.  Designed for students ages 9 and up; parents are required to stay and help in the classroom. Illuminate covers parts of speech, sentence patterns, sentence parsing, and diagramming, as well as composition outlining, creative and academic writing, and various stylistic writing techniques. This class is intended to be repeated for three years. Materials for this class come from Claritas Publishing and Institute for Excellence in Writing.
